SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Chip and computer hardware stocks rose Wednesday in a partial rebound from the previous session's steep declines.

U.S. stocks end up, halting 3-day losing streak
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index ($SOX: news, chart, profile) added 1.1 percent to 444 and the Goldman Sachs Hardware Index ($GHA: news, chart, profile) rose 1.1 percent to 241.9.
Foundry stocks logged the most notable gains: United Microelectronics (UMC: news, chart, profile) closed up 5.5 percent to $4.22, Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM: news, chart, profile) rose 4.5 percent to $7.84, and Chartered Semiconductor added 3.8 percent to $8.13.

Other gainers included Motorola (MOT: news, chart, profile) and National Semiconductor (NSM: news, chart, profile), each up about 3 percent.
