After five years, Motorola Ventures has matured with the volatile tech industry and is preparing to increase its investment in overseas startups, including those in China. India also could be a target.
The Schaumburg-based investment arm of Motorola Inc. wants to help Motorola boost its seamless mobility strategy, said Warren E. Holtsberg, Motorola Venture director of equity investing, global strategy and corporate development.
"If I don't make money, I don't meet strategy and develop the products we need for customers," Holtsberg said Wednesday.
Many of its startups are in the United States with a few in Canada, Israel, France, China and Finland. But Ventures wants to do more in China and enter India because of their pioneering spirit and booming populations eager for new communication devices.
Motorola's main strategy is seamless mobility, the continuous wireless connectivity between the home, auto, office and outside world so that no matter where you go, you have access to different products that will work interchangeably.
Motorola is so eager to pursue this strategy, it intends to review roughly 2,000 companies this year for possible investment.
