Stocks closed mostly lower Monday afternoon, as investors focused on a poor sales outlook at Wal-Mart (WMT:NYSE - commentary - research) rather than lower oil prices and another terror-free weekend.
Based on preliminary tallies, the Dow lost 31 points to 10,078 after an up-and-down session for blue chips; the S&P 500 shed almpst 3 points to 1095, while the Nasdaq ended a fraction higher at 1838. The major indices have gained in five of the past six sessions. The 10-year Treasury note lost 12/32 in price and the yield rose to 4.28%, while the dollar was lower against the yen and euro.
