NEW YORK - Like a boxer shedding pounds to get to his fighting weight, Motorola is trimming down to take on the mobile phone market, shedding jobs and spinning off divisions. This contender is eyeing heavyweight champ Nokia, so it's bound to be a rough brawl--but it's a smart fight for Motorola to pick.

This morning, Motorola (nyse: MOT - news - people ) announced that it would eliminate about 1,000 jobs worldwide and pay $50 million in severance costs. The job cuts will come from a number of different units, including its commercial, government and industrial solutions segment; integrated electronic systems; and broadband communications. Some cuts will also come from eliminating employees who worked with the company's recently spun-off chip-making business, now called Freescale Semiconductor (nyse: FSL - news - people ).
