Software Upgrade an Enabler to VoIP and Supports VLAN

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Nov. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. MOT has begun shipping an integrated version of its 900 MegaHertz (MHz) Canopy wireless broadband radio that features a fully integrated antenna. As a result, these Canopy radios can now reach up to 40 miles in a point-to-multipoint, line-of-sight application and provide enhanced penetration for non line-of-sight applications.

This new Canopy radio, with its high-gain integrated antenna and optional bandpass filter, can extend the service provider's network coverage by offering powerful last mile high-speed data connectivity to remote subscribers. The non line-of-sight capability also allows service providers the opportunity to add subscribers in dense foliage by adding a 900 MHz access point or subscriber module to the existing network.

Motorola also has made available a new software release (R6) for all Canopy 900 MHz modules, which increases the aggregate throughput by a factor of two, up to 2.1 megabits per second to a single user. This new software decreases the latency in the new 900 MHz module to 15 milliseconds from 45 milliseconds giving service providers increased ability to support voice over Internet (VoIP) and gaming applications for their subscribers. This software download is available for all 900 MHz radios already deployed and demonstrates the power of a software defined radio as the upgrade can be done remotely.

The new integrated 900 MHz modules are based on the new Canopy Advantage(TM) platform and include Committed Information Rate (CIR), reduced latency and Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) support.

-- CIR allows the service provider to offer wireless broadband customers
specific service level agreements, such as a higher guaranteed minimum
data throughput or other premium service options.
-- The VLAN support helps manage services to enterprise customers in
campus environments in order to separate internal and external data
communications. It also improves network management by allowing each
subscriber module to operate independently.
"We have tested Motorola's Canopy integrated 900 MHz radios as well as the latest R6 software in more than 100 Canopy 900 MHz subscriber modules. We have been impressed with the reduced latency and increased speeds as well as the performance in non line-of-sight deployments. We believe that in a competitive wireless broadband market, Motorola's Canopy solutions continue to outpace its competitors by engineering products that are scalable and capable of migrating to future standards," said Brian Magnuson, president of Longview, Wash.-based Cascade Networks.

"The speed, CIR and low latency of the integrated 900 MHz units enable service providers to reach enterprise, small office/home office and residential customers anywhere in their coverage area," said Tom Gruba, director of marketing and customer support for Motorola's Canopy Wireless Broadband group.
