Indianapolis-based ViaStar Energy, Inc., is the master distributor for the remote meter reading solution utilizing the IMT transmitter. It will provide Archstone-Smith with more than 10,000 transmitters for its mission-critical utility data needs. Archstone-Smith, based in Englewood, Colo., plans to deploy the fixed-network, wireless solution in its residences in five states by year-end.

"Motorola's new utility solution is by far the most robust and feature- rich product we have seen," said Becky DeSmet, director of Ancillary Services for Archstone-Smith. "Motorola is bringing innovation, simplicity, affordability and longevity to the sub-metering market."

The wireless transmitter, which enables remote reading of meters multiple times per day and access to daily important interval data from a distance, was developed to help businesses and utilities control costs and decrease operating expenses. The fixed-network system uses the IMR Transmitter and Motorola's MOSCAD platform to automate the meter reading and data acquisition process. Sub-metering, with Automated Meter Reading (AMR) equipment, is used to measure water usage in individual apartment dwellings.

"We strive to be at the forefront of innovation in the apartment industry," said DeSmet. "To do that we need an experienced, knowledgeable technology partner to ensure accurate reading of water meters for our apartments. With Motorola, we are getting exactly that."

"Obtaining timely and accurate meter reads has become a business critical initiative for utilities," said Todd Ryden, co-CEO, ViaStar Energy, Inc.

"Motorola has designed this product for the demanding conditions of the utility market. Property owners understand that lesser quality products will yield a higher cost of ownership," said Christopher Day, co-CEO, ViaStar Energy, Inc. "These owners depend upon the uninterrupted operation of their AMR system to accurately bill residents for utility consumption. The quality, longevity and effectiveness of the Motorola products give property owners peace of mind when purchasing an AMR solution."
