General Dynamics C4 Facility wins Green
General Dynamics C4 Facility wins GreenGREEN IDEAS Instrumental in LEED-EB General Dynamics C4 Facility
Surprises come in small packages, just
like GREEN IDEAS, Environmental Building Consultants who provided LEED green
building consulting services for the General Dynamics C4 Facility that has
been awarded it's LEED for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) certification from the
U.S. Green Building Council. GREEN IDEAS provided sustainability management,
strategist, and acted as LEED Project Champion, and liaison with the national
office of the U.S. Green Building Council in Washington, D.C.
GREEN IDEAS -- President, Charlie Popeck was one of the first individuals
in Arizona to obtain accreditation by the U.S. Green Building Council as a
LEED Professional. As a member of the USGBC national organization, and the
current President of the USGBC -- Arizona Chapter, Popeck and his colleague,
Mark Wilhelm oversee over one-third of the LEED commercial projects in
Arizona, which are striving to achieve the coveted green building
certification.
"The General Dynamics LEED for Existing Buildings certification has set a
high standard for the green building industry in Arizona," remarks Popeck.
"This is the very first industrial building in the state of Arizona to meet
USGBC LEED-EB national standards for energy efficiency, and environmental
design. Working with such a dedicated company and the professionals within
General Dynamics was an honor."
With more than 5 percent of the commercial building market registered for
LEED certification, the trend is expected to grow to at least 8 percent by the
end of 2005.
Some additional projects that GREEN IDEAS is consulting on are; The
Phoenix Convention Center -- Phase 1 Expansion, which is the largest
construction project in Arizona history. The project team consists of
Architect Leo A. Daly, and Contractor Hunt-Russell-Alvarado. GREEN IDEAS'
role in the project is charette (brainstorming) facilitator, LEED project
Champion, documentation, administration, and project strategist.
"Building green on a project of this scale makes sense because states own
these building for 30 or 40 years," Popeck said. "The most important cost
associated with any building is the life cycle cost, or costs associated with
operating, maintaining and ultimately disposing of the building." Green
building addresses all of these issues, and the LEED Green Building Rating
System provides a framework for incorporating cost-effective strategies into
the building design.
Other projects include, The Applied Research and Development (ARD)
Building at Northern Arizona University, Reid Park Zoo School in Tucson, and
two other Scottsdale based projects, Chaparral Business Center -- Phase V, and
the City of Scottsdale Senior Center, all slated for LEED certification within
the next two years.
