NEW YORK - Motorola (nyse: MOT - news - people ) expects a hefty gain in the third quarter--but not necessarily from sales.
The handset giant, led by Chairman and Chief Executive (and ex-Sun Microsystems (nasdaq: SUNW - news - people ) President and Chief Operating Officer) Edward J. Zander, declared that it will recognize an after-tax gain of some $780 million, as a result of exchanging its shares in the former Nextel Communications (nasdaq: NXTL - news - people ) for a stake in the new hybrid firm, Sprint Nextel (nyse: S - news - people ).
