Growth by Key Public Companies Keeps SARTA Index in Positive Territory; Sacramento Area Regional Technology Alliance Releases Third Quarter IndexFueled by strong numbers from two of its public companies, the Sacramento Area Regional Technology Alliance (SARTA) reported an overall growth of 2.7 percent in the third quarter of 2005, according to numbers released today by SARTA.
With increases in market cap by SureWest ($44 million) and Thermogenesis ($43.9 million) leading the way, SARTA's Third Quarter Tech Index(TM) rose to 161.52, marking continued growth among companies listed in the overall index. Since its inception in 2003, the SARTA Tech Index has measured continuous healthy growth, climbing steadily in both the public and private sectors.
"The third quarter growth of just under three percent parallels the public markets during the same period," pointed out Oleg Kaganovich, CEO of SARTA, relating that the Dow (2.9 percent), S&P 500 (3.1 percent) and Russell 3000 (3.6 percent) all showed moderate growth over the same timeframe.
Within the private companies in the Sacramento region, the SARTA numbers showed that the fundamentals continued to improve in the third quarter, pointing to expectations of healthy revenue increases ahead in the fourth quarter. A decline in private equity activity by Index companies in the third quarter confirms that as the companies continue to mature, they are in need of less outside capital.
"This is a sign that previously-funded companies are working hard to convert their investment dollars into revenue," Kaganovich said.
Overall, employment numbers across SARTA's private firms rose slightly, with 32 companies holding steady or increasing their payroll numbers. Nine of the Index companies decreased their number of employees, with a trend emerging among small tech companies toward converting their full-time workforce into contractors, thus decreasing the total number of full-time employees on the SARTA Tech Index.
Two companies were added to the SARTA Tech Index in the third quarter: NutraCea, a publicly traded agriculture/biotech company; and Digital Path, a wireless broadband internet startup.
Nine companies are on SARTA's third quarter "Companies to Watch" list, including the following new additions:
-- Agoura Technologies -- a start-up nanotech company that just received A-round funding from American River Ventures.
-- BizFlex Corp. -- a fast-growing internet software company.
-- emTRAIN -- provides human resources and legal compliance e-training.
-- INTRIX -- develops payment processing software.
-- Mobius Technologies, Inc. -- a recycling technology company.
