Maybe you know somebody who shops like this: Buy everything that might even remotely fit into your wardrobe, especially when it's on sale. Take the bags and packages home to sort out what you want and don't want, and then return the unwanted items.

Sometimes all sales are final. But for most U.S. retailers, accepting returns, and accepting them gladly, is standard operating procedure. The customer retention benefit outweighs any business inconvenience.

But there may be limits to merchants' tolerance, at least with some shoppers who make serial returns. Although the retailers aren't really talking about it, they are quietly adopting policies that seek to curb the number of returns customers can make within certain time periods.
