Small Business and Champion Award Winners Honored at Ceremony June 15
The U.S. Small Business Administration's
(SBA) Illinois District Office is pleased to announce Illinois' 2005 Small
Business Person of the Year, Small Business Journalist of the Year, Women in
Business Champion of the Year and Minority Small Business Champion of the
Year.
Each year, SBA's Illinois District Office honors small businesses and
small business advocates for its contributions to Illinois' economy and
society. This year's state winner for the Small Business Person of the Year is
Samuel Zepeda, Jr., President of Vistas Construction, Inc. of Illinois, Inc.
(Vistas). This minority-owned and operated general contractor headquartered
in Chicago was nominated by ShoreBank. Zepeda won over numerous candidates
throughout the state because of his outstanding contributions to the small
business and construction communities.
"Sam Zepeda embodies qualities commonly found in successful entrepreneurs:
a keen vision of what can be, a strong commitment to business and community,
and a willingness to take risks necessary to move forward," said Judith A.
Roussel, Illinois District Director. "These are the qualities that led to Mr.
Zepeda's selection for the top district level award."
Vistas was incorporated in August of 2000 and was certified as an SBA 8(a)
firm in November 2002. In just a few years, Vistas has established itself as
a preferred minority contractor with a unique talent for constructing
Reinforced Concrete Structures, Building Construction Services, Excavation and
Grounds Maintenance services.
Vistas boasts a client list that includes various government agencies such
as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Great Lakes Naval Station. Vistas
also caters to commercial and private clients such as Cornerstone Management
and U.S. Shell. Vistas Construction, Inc. is proud of its reputation for
providing reliable and quality services, and it is determined to continue to
grow and excel in this diverse economy.
"It's exciting that ShoreBank's nomination was recognized by the SBA for
its achievements as a small business," said O. Victoria Lakes-Battle, Vice
